Høst til Hus (Harvest to House)

	Type: Workshop

By: Djernes & Bell,

Location: Jels, Denmark
Year: 2022

Date: 11.11.22-13-11-22
Høst til Hus (Harvest to House) seminar seeks to investigate the interface between agriculture and the built environment. With regenerative ambitions we need to consider how the craftspeople of the earth & the built environment can to collaborate on questions of land-use, material culture, carbon capture, ecological interconnectedness, deep-time and beauty. This cross-disciplinary workshop emerged as part of Building The Symbiocene, a larger cross-disciplinary initiative advocating regenerative change. Høst til Hus - Harvest to House is hosted by Djernes & Bell, Local Works Studio, Høst School & Dinsen/ KADK Summer School
Høst til Hus is founded by Statens Kunst Fond under the Building The Symbiocene Initiative. This seminar is the beginning of a larger inquisitive, experimental, built and grown investigation into the interface between agriculture, architecture and the potential for regenerative and ecological progress.

Djernes & Bell architects have designed the structures and pavilions for Syd For Solen. The pavilion designs are inspired by Søndermarken and its important cultural heritage as a romantic garden. Romantic philosophy pondered the connection of humankind to nature via a harmonious co-existence and this was expressed via a new form of naturalistic garden and an appreciation of natural beauty and the sublime. Historical depictions of romantic garden follies in Søndermarken Copenhagen have inspired a new set of follies or pavilions which aim to illustrate interconnectedness and a regenerative material culture by showcasing circular or bio-based local materials and building crafts.

In close collaboration with Humble & Curious creative consultancy, Djernes & Bell invited artists & craftsfolk working within bio-based regenerative fields to communicate the hope that lies within increased sensitivity to material connectedness and bio-ethics. The primary structures were designed as scaffolding frameworks and were inspired by historic timber-frame constructions. Danish Scaffolding Service, a local scaffolding contractor assisted with the crafting of this utmost circular system - some elements which have been in circulation for over 70 years. This enabled a no-dig build and created the framework for artists and craftsmen to showcase their materials.

The entrance pavilions or 'Eng-Gange' are inspired by drawings of the original 'Eremithytten' or Hermitage in Søndermarken, a small structure of moss and bark with rounded corners and a steep thatched roof. Built in 1787 and written about by Oehlenschlager. Constructed in scaffolding, which is ultimately circular and local - some parts which have been in use for 70-80 years and require no digging, one pavilion is thatched with local danish long-reed, where emphasis is placed on showing the ecological origins of the material by making the flowering tops a visible part of the ornamentation. Thatching as a local building craft has huge potential as a decarbonised and regenerative quick growing material. The second pavilion was draped using end-of-life scaffolding mesh by Niklas Skovgaard a heritage-loom weaver and artist Kristine Møller.

The artists & craftsmen offered educational workshops during the production of the installations, where participants could learn about building with earth, thatching or making bio-textiles, and after that have their work as part of the larger art installations. After the festival, the earth was returned to the gardeners, the thatch was collected as yealms for re-use, textiles and off-cut furniture stored for use next year and the scaffolding returned to the system.

Two bars are shaped from the soil of the neighbouring Frederiksberg Gardens by the hands of artist and ceramicist Davide Ronco. A bar of air dried earthen blocks and a bar in adobe invite festival-goers to feel our earthen mineral heritage and closeness to the soil, which essentially contains fragments of history and holds the hopes for future growth. After the festival has ended, the soil will be returned to the gardens and used to nurture new life.

Djernes & Bell collaborated with natural materials specialist Bonnie Hvillum (Natural Materials Studio) in producing bio-textiles out of the spent grain from Tuborg/ Carlsberg's beer production. These translucent fabrics urge beer-drinkers to contemplate the origins of things, and the intrinsic connection between landscapes, place and product. Here the grains provide shelter and atmosphere as well as the organic beer that can be enjoyed.

On Being Pine

Inspired by the mythological metamorphosis of Pitys and the inter-species collaboratio of symbiotic forest-fungal networks Pitys Pinetum seeks to illustrate the deep connection between all things as well as the need for a new way of seeing non-human entities and inter- being. We explore this idea through an atmospheric and tactile exploration of the ontology of genus Pinus. We will invite visitors to experience the essence of pines, how they have been exploited as a resource and how we may form a new caring and regenerative relationship of co-existence as we take steps to reverse the planetary crises.

Traditional ecological knowledge, forgotten building crafts and vernacular techniques, biology, deep- time and new thinking in materials science and regenerative ecology root the building in the past but also create a zglimpse of hope for a resilient future. We are suggesting a new form of hybrid-structure, new CLT building technologies are incorporated with vernacular building crafts. A giant roof or tent-like structure is constructed by CLT sheets which are perforated to form large weaving frames for a thatched rain-screen. Reminiscent of Bivouac shelters the treehouse invites visitors to ponder on the Age of the Symbiocene through the heart of an old pine tree.

The treehouse and the exhibition seek to present different perspectives on being a pine. The treehouse will house objects representing industrially separated production, traditional crafts, ecological connections, senses-based objects as well as an attempt to portray the pines’ perspective.
For example:

Industrial Resource Extraction: Lumber/ CLT, paper, Fuel, Resin, Pinenes, Pine NutsReciprocal Human-Plant relations: Pine-needle basket, medicinal, pine-cones, arts & craftsMythology & Folklore: Myths, culture, representation, decorationEcology & Connectedness: Forest Fungal connections, inter-breeding, inter-species communication Sensing Pine: Smell, sounds, touch, sightA Pine’s Perspective: Mother & Father, rootedness, communication signals, photosynthesis, deep-time

Cinematic Symbiotic Palads Biotopia
Centre for Cinema & Ecology

Cinematic Symbiotic: Palads Biotopia imagines Axel Torv & Palads as Copenhagen's new centre for Biodiversity and Symbiosis, a Centre for Climate hope and action. Like the shared root word ‘bios’ indicates, life is at the centre of this proposal. Palads and the history of cinema that it represents inspires a feeling of connection and belonging, a common culture that is worth protecting.

We propose extending this principle to illustrate the
interconnectedness of all things and creating a new centre for cinema, interactive and installation art and climate & biodiversity. Preserving Palads’ historic and cultural monument, we wish to build a contextual and regenerative roof-top extension to house new galleries for climate cinema and art. Axel Torv is transformed to a landscape for ecological recovery.

Using principles of regenerative landscape and excavation, we will establish a new habitat where inter-species communities (including humans). We will restore the quality of the soil and porosity of the landscape as well as re-establish the historic waterways that once flowed in the earth at the site, and to which the still standing Waterworks are testament.

Biotopia is dedicated to intersection of cinema, art and science with an emphasis on climate, ecology and regenerating the living environment. Biotopia seeks to make the abstract and complex concepts of climate and biodiversity crises accessible. We wish to create a place that invites everyone to form tactile and empowering understanding of how collective change is possible and very necessary. Together we can build the Symbiocene.
